This letter was e-mailed to the West Briton on the evening of Thursday 03 November in response to an article on page 8 of the West Briton 03 Nov.
Thursday 03rd November 2005
Sir,
Once again I take exception to an article in last weeks West Briton (03 Nov ’05), on page 8 the article with the headline “Long –awaited moves to make play area safe”. For a start the Bowling Green is a perfectly safe area to play, even the gates in question although tatty still function. Yet again we are seeing another disingenuous attempt by the council to make the community appear to be the villains of the piece.
To say that the Town Council has been trying to secure a “long awaited meeting” with the implication that the Community group are the party dragging their heels is perhaps stretching the truth or could it be they mean that unpaid volunteers are unable to take time of from work and travel to a venue of the councils choosing at forty-eight hours notice.
They then go on to say, before amending their position in the last paragraph, that the council has agreed to spend money on new gates, that is a direct contradiction of e-mails from the council on the subject.
“Local residents complain about noisy youths”, who are these local residents?, I live two hundred odd metres from the Bowly and nobody I know has complained. Sure as in every community we have a vociferous local two or three but they are the minority who would prefer to see every teenager in doors with a book by 9pm, it is vigilantism in its worst form, they believe that whoever shouts the loudest wins.
Why does a public space have to be locked by 9pm in the summer and I would imagine 5pm in the winter presumably because it is not monitored by a CCTV camera. What are and where are the youth of this town not yet old enough to sit in a pub and chat with their friends supposed to go? I’m sure Andy Hocking would like the gates shut and locked by 9pm, probably earlier, but then reading the press the local police would like every bar and club closed early, probably all places where people congregate and now even places that sell eggs.
Its about time this Town Council started to work with community groups instead of constantly supplying the negative, you can already see from the article that this council are attending the meeting not with an agenda but a series of ultimatums, they can then position themselves as the injured party with “look your not getting the gates due to the Community Group not responding” or perhaps a more play-area euphemism would be “we took away your swings and your not getting them back until you behave”.

It's really strange how local papers like to encourage negativity through their pages. I have observed media coverage of the Bowling Green over the last year and sometimes wonder if they are talking about the same place that I know in Falmouth.
After attending another excellent event co-ordinated by the community group, I wonder what will be reported in the local press this week. I'm sure it may be ignored as it looked like people having harmless FUN as opposed to usual alleged Anti Social Behavoir happening in the area!
